On April 26, U.S. President Donald Trump met Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in Rome. They met at the funeral for Pope Francis. This was their first meeting after a big argument in February.

After the funeral, President Trump wrote on social media. He said that Russia’s leader, Vladimir Putin, is not trying to stop the war. Trump said, "Putin did not need to shoot missiles at towns and cities. Maybe he does not want peace."

Trump also said there should be stronger punishments for Putin. He said, "Too many people are dying."

At the funeral, Trump and Zelensky talked for about 15 minutes inside St. Peter’s Basilica. The White House said the meeting was "very good."

President Zelensky also said it was a "very important meeting." He wrote on social media that he hopes their talk will bring good results.

The meeting happened while Trump is asking Ukraine to agree to a peace plan. Trump said that Ukraine and Russia are "very close" to making a deal.

The peace plan asks Ukraine to give up some land and not join NATO. Ukraine does not agree with this plan.
